Unit 4 - Section 3: Volitional Form Changes
Volitional form (〜よう / 〜おう)
The volitional form means “let’s…” or “I think I will…”. It is the speaker’s intention, not a command.
How to make it
- Ichidan (ru-verbs): drop る, add よう — 食べる → 食べよう
- Godan (u-verbs): change the last -u to -o and add う — 行く → 行こう, 飲む → 飲もう, 話す → 話そう
- Irregular: する → しよう, 来る → 来よう
Polite invitation uses 〜ましょう: 行きましょう.
Examples

今日は早く帰ろう。
I think I’ll go home early today.
コーヒーにしよう。
I’ll go with coffee. (decision)
