Unit 6 - Section 3: 〜ば

〜ば (if)

ば is a provisional “if”. It is common in writing, advice, and “if A is true, B follows”. In speech, たら often replaces it.

Formation

  • Ichidan: drop る, add れば — 食べれば
  • Godan: change the last -u to -e and add ば — 行けば, 読めば, 話せば
  • Irregular: すれば, 来れば
  • i-adjective: drop い, add ければ — 安ければ
  • Noun / na-adjective: なら(ば) — 学生なら

Examples

時間があれば、手伝います。
If I have time, I’ll help.
安ければ、買います。
If it’s cheap, I’ll buy it.
分からなければ、聞いてください。
If you don’t understand, please ask. (なければ = negative ば)

ば likes a general or logical link. For “when I get there, I’ll call”, たら is more natural than ば.
