Unit 6 - Section 2: 〜と
〜と (whenever / if A, then B)
と after a dictionary-form verb or i-adjective marks a tight link: when A happens, B follows. It is common for habits, instructions, and natural results. It is not the particle と “and / with”.
Formation
- Verb (dictionary form) + と — 春が来ると
- i-adjective + と — 安いと
- Noun / na-adjective + だと — 雨だと
The second clause is usually a non-volitional result, a habit, or a set procedure. Avoid “I will…” plans here; use たら for those.
Examples
春が来ると、桜が咲きます。
When spring comes, the cherries bloom. (natural law)
このボタンを押すと、ドアが開きます。
If you press this button, the door opens. (instruction / automatic result)
夜になると、静かになります。
When night comes, it gets quiet. (habitual)
Odd: 春が来ると、旅行しよう。 A decision or invitation after と sounds wrong. Say 春が来たら、旅行しよう.
