Unit 6 - Section 1: 〜たら

〜たら (when / if)

たら is the past form plus ら. For verbs, take the た-form and add ら: 食べた → 食べたら. For nouns and na-adjectives, だったら.

Formation

  • Verb: た-form + ら — 行ったら, 読んだら, 来たら
  • i-adjective: drop い, add かったら — 高かったら
  • Noun / na-adjective: だったら — 休みだったら

Do not “replace だ with ら” on verbs. The た is part of the past ending; ら is added after it.

Uses

東京に着いたら、電話します。
When I arrive in Tokyo, I’ll call. (sequence: A happens, then B)
雨が降ったら、家にいます。
If it rains, I’ll stay home. (possible future)
もし宝くじに当たったら、何をしますか。
If you won the lottery, what would you do?

たら is the most common spoken conditional. It can mark a one-time event, a discovery, or a hypothesis.
