Unit 2 - Section 3: Causative Form Changes
Causative form — how it is built
使役 is “make / let someone do”. The person who is caused to act takes に (or を with intransitive verbs).
Conjugation
- Ichidan: る → させる — 食べる → 食べさせる
- Godan: -u → -a + せる — 行く → 行かせる, 読む → 読ませる, 待つ → 待たせる
- Irregular: する → させる, 来る → 来させる
Make vs let
Japanese does not mark “force” vs “permission” on the verb itself. Tone, てあげる, or させてあげる carry “let”.
母は弟に野菜を食べさせました。
Mother made (or had) my brother eat vegetables.
子供を外で遊ばせました。
I let the children play outside. (intransitive 遊ぶ → を + causative)
先に帰らせてください。
Please let me go home first. (request for permission)
