Unit 2 - Section 1: Passive Form Changes

Passive form — how it is built

受身 is “be V-ed”. For ichidan verbs it looks identical to the potential (見られる). Godan uses れる, not られる.

Conjugation

  • Ichidan (ru-verbs): る → られる — 食べる → 食べられる
  • Godan (u-verbs): -u → -a + れる — 書く → 書かれる, 読む → 読まれる, 話す → 話される
  • Irregular: する → される, 来る → 来られる

The doer, if mentioned, takes に: 先生にほめられました.

Examples

この建物は1950年に建てられました。
kono tatemono wa 1950-nen ni tateraremashita — This building was built in 1950.
弟にケーキを食べられました。
My little brother ate the cake (on me). Adversity passive: I am affected.

見られる can mean “can see” or “is seen”. If the subject is a person who has an ability, it is often potential. If the subject receives the action, it is passive.
