Too Much, Degree, Frequency
Learn to express degree, extent, and frequency in Japanese. These patterns help you describe how much, how often, and intensity levels.
Too Much / Excessively
Pattern: [Adjective] すぎる (sugiru) = too [adjective]
Express that something is excessive or beyond what's desirable
この映画は長すぎます。
[Kono eiga wa nagsugimasu]
Translation: This movie is too long.
値段が高すぎます。
[Nedan ga takasugimasu]
Translation: The price is too expensive.
Frequency Expressions
Common Frequency Adverbs:
- いつも (itsumo) - always
- よく (yoku) - often / frequently
- 時々 (tokidoki) - sometimes
- たまに (tamani) - occasionally
- ほとんど〜ない (hotondo~nai) - hardly ever
- 絶対〜ない (zettai~nai) - never
私は毎日ジムに行きます。
[Watashi wa mainichi jimu ni ikimasu]
Translation: I go to the gym every day.
よく映画を見ます。
[Yoku eiga wo mimasu]
Translation: I often watch movies.
Degree/Extent Expressions
How much/How intense:
- 非常に (hijou ni) - very / extremely
- とても (totemo) - very
- かなり (kanari) - quite / considerably
- 少し (sukoshi) - a little / slightly
- 全然 (zenzen) - not at all
今日は非常に暑いです。
[Kyou wa hijou ni atsui desu]
Translation: It's extremely hot today.
この料理は辛すぎます。
[Kono ryouri wa karasugimasu]
Translation: This food is too spicy.
Degree Pattern Summary
