Numbers 1-100 in Japanese

Learning numbers is essential for shopping, telling time, and everyday conversations. Let's start with the basics!

Basic Numbers 1-10

Important Notes:
  • 4: Can be pronounced "shi" or "yon". Usually "yon" is used (shi sounds like "death" 死)
  • 7: Can be pronounced "shichi" or "nana". "Nana" is more common
  • 9: Can be pronounced "kyuu" or "ku". "Kyuu" is more common

Numbers 11-100

11-19: Simply add the number after じゅう (10)
11 = じゅういち
(juu-ichi = 10 + 1)
12 = じゅうに
(juu-ni = 10 + 2)
15 = じゅうご
(juu-go = 10 + 5)
17 = じゅうなな
(juu-nana = 10 + 7)
18 = じゅうはち
(juu-hachi = 10 + 8)
19 = じゅうきゅう
(juu-kyuu = 10 + 9)
Tens: 20, 30, 40, etc.
20 にじゅう ni-juu (2 x 10) 60 ろくじゅう roku-juu (6 x 10)
30 さんじゅう san-juu (3 x 10) 70 ななじゅう nana-juu (7 x 10)
40 よんじゅう yon-juu (4 x 10) 80 はちじゅう hachi-juu (8 x 10)

Practical Usage: Prices

Numbers are used with 円 (えん/en) for Japanese yen:

これは百円ひゃくえんです。
[Kore wa hyaku-en desu]
Translation: This is 100 yen.
りんごは二百五十円にひゃくごじゅうえんです。
[Ringo wa ni-hyaku-go-juu-en desu]
Translation: The apple is 250 yen.
