Xは Yですか (Questions)

Learn how to ask questions in Japanese using the question particle か. This is one of the most fundamental ways to gather information.

Question Particle か

Pattern: X は Y ですか

Usage: Add か at the end to turn a statement into a question

Meaning: "Is X Y?" or "Is X Y?"

Punctuation: Use ? or 。- both are acceptable in Japanese

Examples:
田中たなかさんは先生せんせいですか。
[Tanaka-san wa sensei desu ka]
Translation: Is Tanaka a teacher?
これは本ほんですか。
[Kore wa hon desu ka]
Translation: Is this a book?
私わたしは学生がくせいですか。
[Watashi wa gakusei desu ka]
Translation: Am I a student?

Question and Answer Patterns

Simple Yes/No Questions:

何 (なに/なん) - What
これは何ですか。
[Kore wa nani desu ka]
Translation: What is this?
あなたの職業しょくぎょうは何ですか。
[Anata no shokugyou wa nani desu ka]
Translation: What is your profession?
誰 (だれ) - Who
この人ひとは誰ですか。
[Kono hito wa dare desu ka]
Translation: Who is this person?
どこ - Where
駅えきはどこですか。
[Eki wa doko desu ka]
Translation: Where is the station?
いつ - When
誕生日たんじょうびはいつですか。
[Tanjoubi wa itsu desu ka]
Translation: When is your birthday?

Conversation Example

Person A: すみません、あなたは学生ですか。
[Sumimasen, anata wa gakusei desu ka]
Excuse me, are you a student?

Person B: はい、大学生だいがくせいです。
[Hai, daigakusei desu]
Yes, I'm a university student.

Person A: 大学だいがくはどこですか。
[Daigaku wa doko desu ka]
Which university?

Person B: 東京とうきょう大学だいがくです。
[Toukyou daigaku desu]
Tokyo University.

Study Tips

Master Question Asking:
  • Intonation: Your voice should rise at the end when asking a question
  • Particle か: Always remember to add か at the end - this is what makes it a question
  • Practice responses: Learn to answer with はい or いいえ followed by the appropriate response
  • Question words: Memorize the five W's: 何 (what), 誰 (who), どこ (where), いつ (when), なぜ (why)
