Xは Yじゃありません (Negative Sentences)
Learn how to make negative statements using じゃありません, the negative form of です. This is essential for saying what something is NOT.
Negative Pattern: じゃありません
Pattern: X は Y じゃありません
Meaning: "X is not Y"
Casual form: じゃない
Polite form: じゃありません
Examples:
私は学生じゃありません。
[Watashi wa gakusei ja arimasen]
Translation: I am not a student. (polite)
私は学生じゃない。
[Watashi wa gakusei ja nai]
Translation: I am not a student. (casual)
これは本じゃありません。
[Kore wa hon ja arimasen]
Translation: This is not a book.
私は先生じゃありません。

Negative Question and Answer
Question with じゃありませんか:
田中さんは先生じゃありませんか。
[Tanaka-san wa sensei ja arimasen ka]
Translation: Isn't Tanaka a teacher? / Tanaka is not a teacher, is he?
Answers:
Affirmative Answer: いいえ、先生です。
[Iie, sensei desu] - "No, he is a teacher."
Negative Answer: はい、先生じゃありません。
[Hai, sensei ja arimasen] - "Yes, he is not a teacher."
Cultural Note: In Japanese, when answering a negative question, the logic is: if you agree with the negative statement, you say "はい" (yes, I agree it's not...). If you disagree, you say "いいえ" (no, actually it is...).
