Usage of the Te-form (て形)
The te-form is an important verb conjugation in Japanese used to connect sentences, express sequence of actions, and more.
Te-form Conjugation Rules
Ichidan Verbs (る-verbs)
Remove 「る」 and add 「て」
- 食べる → 食べて
- 見る → 見て
Godan Verbs (う-verbs)
Conjugation rules vary depending on the verb ending
- Ending in う / つ / る → って
Example: 買う → 買って - Ending in む / ぬ / ぶ → んで
Example: 飲む → 飲んで - Ending in く → いて
Example: 書く → 書いて (Exception: 行く → 行って) - Ending in ぐ → いで
Example: 泳ぐ → 泳いで - Ending in す → して
Example: 話す → 話して
Irregular Verbs
- する → して
- 来る → 来て
Example Sentences
1. Connecting Two Actions
朝、起きて、顔を洗います。
[Asa, okite, kao wo araimasu]
Translation: In the morning, I wake up and wash my face.
2. Expressing a Reason
雨が降って、試合が中止になりました。
[Ame ga futte, shiai ga chuushi ni narimashita]
Translation: Because it rained, the game was canceled.
3. Expressing a Method / Means
電車に乗って、会社に行きます。
[Densha ni notte, kaisha ni ikimasu]
Translation: I go to the office by train.
4. Expressing a State
窓が開いています。
[Mado ga aite imasu]
Translation: The window is open.
